Making Local Food Work; Local Food Shift
Mark Guttridge is an environmental and water resource engineer, a self-proclaimed "science junky" and the owner of Ollin Farms in Longmont. Mark and his wife Kena, who has an accounting and teaching background, started the farm in 2008. "Ollin" is an Aztec word meaning “constant motion or change,” which reflects the living organism of a farm. The Guttridges focus on a bionutrient model of farming, and they have dedicated a great deal of time and effort into sharing their knowledge of soil and sustainable farming. "While we love growing nourishing food for our community, we have found that one of the biggest needs in building sustainable local food systems is education. Whether through cooking demos, school tours, gardening classes, nutrition seminars or farm dinners, we have found ourselves getting more involved each year in connecting our community with the soil and with food that sustains it," says Mark.
